Asbestos: The first documented case of mesothelioma linked to exposure of asbestos was in 1964.
Asbestos Related Illnesses/Diseases
-Diffuse Pleural Thickening (DPT): Thickening of visceral pleura with obliteration of pleural space
-Pleural Plaques: Thickening of the parietal and visceral pleura and most common of asbestos related diseases
-Pleural Effusion: Buildup of fluid between the two pleural layers
-Rounded Effusion (a/k/a Blesovsky’s or Folded Lung Syndrome): Infolding of thickened visceral pleura with collapse of the intervening lung parenchyma.
-Lung Cancer: Adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, large and small cell carcinoma
-Mesothelioma: Aggressive and incurable tumor that appears 15-50 years after the initial asbestos exposure
-Pleuritis: Excessive inflammation of the pleura
-COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder): Exposure does not directly cause, but can increase a person’s risk of developing COPD

-There were 2,535 deaths from mesothelioma registered in 2012.
-There were 464 deaths from asbestosis without mention of mesothelioma registered in 2012.
-There are 900 newly assessed cases of asbestosis (IIDB 2013).
-There are 430 newly assessed cases of diffuse pleural thickening (IIDB 2013).
-There are 673 estimated number of cases of non malignant pleural disease reported to specialist physicians (THOR/SWORD 2013)
